She knew she was a cowgirl though she lived in Upstate New York where cowgirls were as scarce as hen’s teeth. She knew all about cowgirls from watching “Fury” “Sky Masterson” and “Annie Oakley” on the 12 inch black and white TV in the living room. The TV cowgirls had a horse, a hat and cowboy boots. It was clear that she needed more specialized equipment if she was ever to become what she was meant to be.
The most pressing equipment need was a horse. She begged her Mom and Dad so constantly and pitifully that they finally relented and took in and old horse from a kid’s camp in the Adirondacks. The horse, “Twinkletoes” was so old his back sagged and he sighed whenever someone got on his back to ride. He was also barn shy and would only gallop when he headed back to his stall. The entire Twinkletoes experience was disappointing. Then she grew up and forgot about being a cowgirl.
One day when she was a very old lady she found “Boot City” on the web. She found cowboy boots that were red, blue, pink and white, with gems and studs. She remembered that she had once wanted to be a cowgirl and ride the range. She ordered the boots and wore them to her Master Gardeners meetings where all of the other old ladies marveled at her boots and asked where she got them. Then one by one they went to the web and ordered their own.
The moral of this story is you are never too old to become a cowgirl. You just need the right boots.
